Woodford County 4-H Entomology Workshop

Interested in learning more about insects and preparing your 4-H Entomology exhibit?

Join us for the Woodford County 4-H Entomology Workshop on January 22 at 5:00 p.m. at the Woodford County Extension Office, 1201 S. Main Street, Suite 2, Eureka, IL 61530.

Whether you are new to Entomology or working toward completing an advanced collection, this workshop will help youth understand exhibit requirements, properly collect and preserve insect specimens, and create a display ready for fair judging. Participants will learn insect pinning and labeling techniques, review exhibit rules, and receive guidance on building collections that meet state fair requirements.

Youth enrolled in Entomology 1, 2, or 3 will learn about species and order requirements, exhibit case guidelines, and record-keeping expectations. Participants can also explore ideas for the Entomology Display class, which allows members to showcase entomology knowledge through demonstrations, posters, digital presentations, websites, games, and other creative projects.

Important exhibit reminders include:

Display cases should be appropriately sized for the number of insects exhibited and no deeper than 4 inches.
Collections must consist of properly prepared, non-living insect specimens.
Exhibits may be displayed upright during judging and exhibition.
Insect specimens must be accurately labeled.
Youth exhibiting the same collection over multiple years must add new specimens each year according to project requirements.

This workshop is a great opportunity to get questions answered, receive hands-on assistance, and start preparing for a successful 4-H show season. Bring your insect collection, project manual, or any questions you may have.
