Winter Tree Identification

The most common way to identify trees is by their leaves, but trees spend almost half the year leafless. University of Illinois Extension is offering a FREE in-person Winter Tree Identification workshop at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center (9795 Lake Rd, Carlyle, IL) to teach about the basics of Winter Tree Identification.  Mary Grapperhaus, a retired Natural Resources Coordinator for Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will teach the basic characteristics used to identify trees in winter, including location, bark, twigs, buds, as well as terminology, techniques, and tools for identifying unknown tree species.

After the classroom setting, the class will go on a hands-on Winter Tree Identification hike at Chipmunk Trail at Carlyle Lake.

If you have questions or would like to register by phone, please call Kaylen at 618-327-8881.
