Thank you for your interest in our Weekend Gardener Program. We will be hosting it at the Madison County Farm Bureau, 900 Hillsboro Avenue, Edwardsville, IL.
The cost of the program is $20, which includes breakfast and handouts.
A continental breakfast will be served from 8:15 - 9 a.m. with the program beginning promptly at 9.

9 a.m. So You Can’t Grow Lavender in Illinois?, Kim Hansen and Kris Straub, Tenderloin Farms
Don't tell Kim Hansen and her sister, Kris Straub they can't grow lavender in Illinois. Their lavender fields have yielded an eye popping, sweet smelling, business success at Tenderloin Farms near Edwardsville.
9 a.m. The Joy of Seeds, Elizabeth Wahle, Extension Educator
Whether purchasing or saving your own, seeds are a great way to start new plants, especially if you want multiples. What’s even better is it can be done on the cheap or as expensive as you want to make it. Join Elizabeth as she discusses and demonstrates the more cost effective methods for breaking seed dormancy and successfully growing plants from seed.
10 a.m. Edible Landscaping- The plants that make it possible, Matt Lebon, Custom Foodscaping
In this talk we will go over a myriad of plants that lend themselves well to edible landscaping. We’ll talk about strategies for implementation and design tips for putting the right plant in the right place.
10 am: Bringing Conservation Home: Partnering with Mother Nature, Charlie Pitts, U of I Master Naturalist
BCH is St. Louis Audubon Society’s premier educational outreach program, providing information and support to residents seeking to beautify their yard while increasing its biodiversity. BCH is available to all greater St. Louis area residents, including Illinois locations. The presentation covers BCH’s history and details how we meet with residents on their property to understand their nature scaping goals and to provide specific recommendations for native plants which support those goals.
11 am: How to Attract Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds to Your Own Backyard Pollinator Garden, Kim Rohling, Horticulture Extension Educator
Learn about the natural history of the ruby-throated hummingbird, tips on supplemental feeding, and native plant species that are attractive to hummingbirds. Did you know that there are citizen science projects looking for your observations on these magnificent creatures?
11 a.m. Plant Identification- Then and Now, Ned Siegel, U of I Master Naturalist
This presentation will take a glimpse into how our native flowering plants have historically been classified and named while also chronicling the assorted ways in which we, as ‘weekend gardeners', may have learned to identify them. As those means have clearly changed as new technologies have entered our daily lives, the talk will review an assortment of our native spring-blooming wildflowers along with an assessment of how effective our smart phones are in identifying a plant that is either new to us or in confirming the ID of an old ‘friend’.
