Unit-Wide 4-H Summer Hiking Club

4-H Summer Hiking Club

Trail Tuesdays!

Explore the great outdoors this summer. Join us as we venture out to several hiking trails in Christian, Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery Counties.  We will have a short presentation at each park, followed by walking the trails. Get your hiking trail passport stamped at all locations and enjoy time spent in nature. This program is open to 4-H members ages 8-18. Parents or guardians may attend. If you have any questions or need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please email harding@illinois.edu

June 9 - (Jersey Co.) Pere Marquette State Park, Grafton, IL
A nature lover's paradise. In addition to enjoying the spectacular views of the Illinois River and its backwaters, there are several points atop the bluffs that visitors can view.

June 30 - (Christian Co.) Sangchris Lake State Park, Taylorville, IL

Located minutes southeast of Springfield, Sangchris Lake State Park serves as a perfect home base for enjoying outdoor activities amid native forests of oak, maple, butternut and persimmon. The park totals more than 3,000 acres, with 120 miles of shoreline on Sangchris Lake, a power station cooling lake constructed in 1964

July 7 - (Macoupin Co.) Beaver Dam State Park, Carlinville, IL

Located in Macoupin County, 7 miles southwest of Carlinville and situated in an oak/hickory woodland, Beaver Dam State Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities on its 750 acres. Although beavers are virtually gone from this area, the park is named for a beaver dam that created its lake

July 28 - (Montgomery Co.) Bremer Sanctuary, Butler, IL
Bremer Sanctuary is a 311-acre sanctuary run entirely by dedicated volunteers. During our visit, youth will learn about the history of the sanctuary and what it means to be an Illinois Audubon sanctuary, one of only a few in the state. We’ll hike the trails, stop by a pond or creek, and use a net to discover small water creatures living beneath the surface.
