The Edible Wild Path Seasonal Course
Illinois Extension Family and Consumer Sciences and Natural Resources, Environment, and Energy departments bring to you a seasonal beginner foraging course. Each session will have three parts:
1. Classroom-style presentation (1 hr): foraged food safety, laws and regulations, storage, preservation, and identification of common foraged species.
2. Field experience (1.5 hr): Hike with Master Naturalist Chandler Womack and Educator Karla Griesbaum to explore edible wild food, how to harvest, and ethical practices.
3. Cooking class (1.5 hr): Use common foraged foods to create some delicious and healthy recipes with Educator Rachel Mannen, then have a communal lunch with our delicious meal.
The sessions will take place on the following dates, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm:
April 14, 2026
August 25, 2026
October 21, 2026
January 29, 2027
You can sign up for all sessions or pick individual sessions. All sessions are $30. All four would amount to $120.
All sessions will take place at the Illinois Extension 4-H camp located within Allerton Park in Monticello, IL. The address is 499 Old Timber Rd, Monticello, IL 61856.
Participants need to wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. We may be cooking outside for some sessions. Must be able to hike at a decent pace for 1.5 hours.
If you need reasonable accommodation to participate, contact Karla Griesbaum, kherzma2@illinois.edu.
