Taking the Next Steps in Cover Crop Management

Local corn and soybean producers are invited to attend "Taking the Next Steps in Cover Crop Management", an educational program focused on advancing cover crop management and decision‑making.

The program will be held on Tuesday, August 11, at the Lena Community Center, 497 Lions Drive, Lena, IL from 8:00 am to 11:15 am. 

This event is designed for producers who are ready to deepen their understanding of cover crop systems and explore more management‑intensive practices.

8:00-8:05 | Welcome - Kathryn Seebruck, Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator

8:05-8:50 | Mixing up your cover crops - Nathan Johanning, Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Specialist and Illinois representative for the Midwest Cover Crop Council. Cover crop mixtures can be a great way to add more diversity to your cover crop portfolio. We will talk generally about seeding rates, building a cover crop mix, and ways to get them established. 

8:50-9:35 | Drone application of cover crops - Zach Lieb, Agri Soar Solutions, LLC

9:35-9:45 | Break

9:45-10:15 | Cover crop management tactics - Nathan Johanning. We will talk about a range of management decisions, including termination and planting green, herbicide carryover to cover crops, managing crop nutrition, and more.

10:15-10:35 | Making cover crops pencil out - Kathryn Seebruck. We will discuss the economics of cover cropping, including both direct and indirect costs and benefits, to help producers assess how the implementation of cover crops and various cover cropping strategies might benefit their operation.

10:35-10:40 | Break

10:40-11:15 | Farmer panel. This discussion provides attendees the opportunity to hear firsthand experiences, lessons learned, and practical advice from producers who have successfully integrated cover crops into their operations.
