Register below for the Spring Series of classes led by local experts featuring a variety of topics to help you grow in your knowledge of hot topics in home horticulture and the environment.
- TWO PRESENTATIONS per evening!
- The cost is $15 per evening, or $40 for all 3 evenings.
- Dates: Monday April 14, 21 and 28.
- Sessions run from 6 to 8pm, with doors opening at 5:30. Each session is 45 min allowing for 15 min between for Q & A and the provided snacks
April 14th :
- Farming and Foraging of Gourmet Mushrooms, presented by Joshua McAtee, Owner Wild Growth Gourmet Mushrooms
Gourmet mushrooms have soared in popularity across the USA in the past decade. With so many varieties being more available than ever before, many people are curious to learn more about how they are grown commercially - and even more are delighted to learn that so many are native species found right here in the region! Josh McAtee, owner of Wild Growth Gourmet Mushrooms located in Mercer County, IL, will show how commercial farms grow them year round while also highlighting the many exotic species found locally and how to identify them.
- The Backyard Battle: Identifying and Managing Invasive Species, presented by Emily Swihart, Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator
Part of managing a home landscape is engaging in the battle with invasive species. Join Emily Swihart, horticulture educator, in a program designed to help you take back control of your landscape from uninvited and overbearing guests. Learn how to identify and strategies to manage the backyard party crashers to reclaim your lawn and garden.

- Backyard Bird Cousins, presented by Jimmy Wiebler, Naturalist and Research Coordinator at Nahant Marsh
You may be familiar with the cardinal and chickadee, but did you know there are many species of these birds? Come learn about closely-related bird “cousins” of common groups such as cardinals, chickadees, jays, wrens, doves, hummingbirds, and more.
- Forest Bathing: The Japanese Art and Science of Shinrin-Yoku, presented by Leslie O’Ryan, professor in the Counselor Education Department at Western Illinois University
We all know how good being in nature can make us feel. It helps ease our stress and worry. Plus, it makes us relax and think more clearly. This presentation will describe the practice of Forest Bathing.
