Pruning Old, Neglected Apple Trees Workshop
Do you have an old, neglected apple tree on your farm, at your home, or at a property you visit or manage? Want to get that tree productive and healthy once more, but not sure where to start? This in-person workshop hosted by PrairiErth Farm, Illinois Extension, and Savanna Institute IL is the perfect starting point.
On Saturday February 7th, at PrairiErth Farm from 1:00PM to 3:00PM, Kaitie Adams, John Williams, and Nick Frillman will present on:
- the basics of fruit tree pruning principles including tree structure, types of growth to remove, and tool sanitation
- how pruning old, neglected fruit trees differs in terms of strategy, time table, game plan, and tools needed
- how to actually get the old, neglected fruit tree pruning process started with electric saws and more
This program will be one part classroom style learning and one part field demonstration, with plenty of time for Q & A along the way.
Participants are highly encouraged to dress for the weather, as early February can be nice... or not so nice! The classroom-style learning activity will be hosted in a greenhouse, while the field demonstration will be outdoors. Coffee and tea will be provided to keep participants warm!
If available, participants that have them should bring pole saws. This year, there will be less hands-on pruning and more observation, due to liability rules regarding power tool use. We hope to offer some limited opportunities for manual pole saw use to apply principles learned in the class.
Now is your chance to learn how to rehab that old, potentially-productive apple (or pear, or peach) tree! Get the knowledge now, and grow more fruit later.
If you need an accommodation for this in-person workshop, or you have any other questions, please reach out to Nick Frillman at frillma2@illinois.edu
NOTE: if inclement weather occurs or is forecast for the program date, program will be rescheduled to Sunday, February 15th, for the same time (1-3PM) at the same location.
