Pickerelweed Project: Education and Training
Join Illinois Extension and Urbana Park District to learn how establishing the right “weed” for your pond or wetland can help support native bees, including a local endangered bee, the Pickerelweed Longhorned Bee.
Date: Friday, May 29, 2026
Time: 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Place: Meadowbrook Park, 2808 S Race St, Urbana, IL 61802
Discussion topics by Illinois Extension Educator Karla Griesbaum and Urbana Park District Environmental Public Program Coordinator Sreelakshmi Suresh will include native and specialist bees, wetlands and wetland plants, the endangered pickerelweed longhorn bee, selecting the right location for pickerelweed, and planting pickerelweed in a pond or wetland.
This program will involve a 3/4 mile paved walk through Meadowbrook Park to the wetland, for a total distance of 1.5 miles.
In the event of rain, we will have a shortened program that will take place in the barn at Meadowbrook Park.
For questions or reasonable accommodation to participate, contact Karla Griesbaum, kherzma2@illinois.edu.
