Do you love taking photos and being in nature? If so, we'll teach you how to "create images" that tell a story in this level 1 photography program. Already know the basics? Join us as a Teen or Volunteer Teacher!!!
Participants will learn about and practice skills in any or all concepts listed below as time allows in the gorgeous Willowhaven Nature Park and Perry Park Farm!!!

- Composition
- Lighting
- Point-of-view
- Focus
- Macro photography
- And more...
In collaboration with Bourbonnais Township Park District, this fall, youth age 12-18 (or younger with guardian attendance and assistance) can participate in a fun and engaging photography program at the beautiful Willowhaven Nature Park (1451 N 4000 E Rd, Kankakee) and Perry Park Farm (459 Kennedy Drive, Bourbonnais)in Kankakee County, part of Bourbonnais Township Park District.
Teen & ADULT "TEACHERS" (parents, teachers, leaders, Master Naturalists or Gardeners - anyone that wants to learn and teach photography) -- If you agree to arrive at the start of this program, teach youth during this program and at least 10 youth within a year of this program, you will be taught all lessons at NO CHARGE - just sign up as a Volunteer Photo Instructor.
Participants will be given optional activities and challenges to complete between sessions in which they may receive additional showcase opportunities for their photos.
Date, time, and location - In the event of rain, the program will move to Willowhaven. Exact topics subject to change pending participant interest and time. Locations within Bourbonnais Park District subject to change.
- Wednesday, 9/6/23, 5:30-7:30 PM, Perry Park Farm Farmstead to include the farm animals!
- 5:30 PM Teen Teachers and Adult Teachers arrive
- 6:15 PM Youth participants arrive
- Wednesday, 10/4/23, 5:30-7:30 PM, Perry Park Farm prairies, ponds, and trails
- 5:30 PM Teen Teachers and Adult Teachers arrive
- 6:15 PM Youth participants arrive
- Wednesday, 10/18/23, 5:30-7:30 PM, Willowhaven Park
- 5:30 PM Teen Teachers and Adult Teachers arrive
- 6:15 PM Youth participants arrive
- Thursday, 10/26/23, 5:30-7:30 PM - Culminating Event to include Photo Gallery Showcase
- Everyone arrives at 5:30 PM.
If participants are unable to make one or more of the dates, they can request a take home packet for most of the activities. Just let us know as soon as possible.
Photography level 2 - Telling Stories through Images will be offered right after level 1 if there's enough interest in level 1. This registration is ONLY for level 1. Level 2 will be announced later in August.
Youth will be encouraged to enroll in fair projects summer 2024 as related to activities in this program. This is not required but we'd LOVE to see what youth have learned!!!
Registration information:
- The cost for this program is $20 for the first youth in the family, $5 for 2nd youth in the family and no charge for additional family members.
- The registration deadline is 11:59 PM, 8/31/23.
- Minimum number of participants is 10 youth - please share as this program is open to all youth regardless of county and 4-H enrollment.

WEATHER - In the event of inclement weather (storms and heavy rain), the session will be converted to at home learning or added on to another date, where possible. Notifications will be sent ASAP if inclement weather is predicted.
PROGRAM AWARDS - This program, Creating Impactful Images, won the Excellence in Communication and Expressive Arts Award for Illinois for 2022 programming. The series this fall will help Shannon finalize the program before submission as a statewide, and possibly nationwide program!
