Pasture Walk at Edmison Acres and Highland Cattle
This registration has been archived.
Join us for a relaxed evening walking through the pastures of Edmison Acres & Highland Cattle. Located in Johnsonville IL, Lindsey and her family regeneratively graze their herd of 18 Highland Cattle and manage a row crop grain farm. Edmison Acres showcases the importance of soil health and rotation while grazing on small acres. Lindsey brings her experience growing up with Angus beef cattle to better Edmison Acres and manage their herd of Highland and Highland cross cattle.
The Edmisons have provided a creative example of raising and selling cattle outside of the traditional beef cattle marketing. While not commonly seen in Illinois pastures, Highland Cattle are a hardy multi-purpose breed used for meat, milk, fiber, and draft animals. The breed is a creative option for those wanting to graze cattle but may only have a few acres.
While at the farm we will discuss how Edmison Acres was started, their goals and management strategies, and the requirements of raising Highland Cattle in southern IL. Additionally, we will hear from Watershed Outreach Associate, Emma Eldridge, about the Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy in Illinois.
The meeting will last approximately 1 ½ hours and be held outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring a lawn chair. We plan to walk to various parts of the farm on uneven ground, please wear appropriate footwear. A cooler with water will be provided. If you need a reasonable accommodation reach out to: Katie bell
