Just in time for flying south – The October ECIMN CE Presentation
Title: Bird migration in a changing world
Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Van Doren
Date: Monday, October 20, 2025,
Time: 7 - 8 pm
Location: Champaign County Extension/Farm Bureau Building (801 Country Fair Drive, Champaign) in the Auditorium
Description:
Avian migrations are spectacular natural phenomena, but human activities and a changing world pose threats to their cross-hemispheric journeys. The impacts of a changing world on migratory birds will be highlighted, with a focus on changing climates and landscapes. Many recent advances have been made possible by modern machine learning tools that have unlocked the potential of global citizen science databases, continental radar networks, and acoustic monitoring devices. These new tools are contributing to scientific knowledge while stimulating public interest and political will to take meaningful conservation action.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Benjamin Van Doren is an assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois. He studies the responses of migratory birds to environmental change. His research spans spatial and population scales and unites ecology, evolution, behavior, and conservation. Dr. Van Doren leads the Migration Biology Lab at the University of Illinois.
