Nature Photography Scavenger Hunt/Bingo - Summer 2023 (Learn while exploring!)

This program is no longer accepting registrations.  Please contact 4-H Youth Development Educator Shannon Range for questions.  SLRange@illinois.edu.

Enjoy being in nature, hiking (at least one mile), AND taking photos?  Want to have fun, explore, and create images (not just take photos) you can display and maybe even exhibit later?  Here's your chance to do just that!

You will have 30 days to learn photo concepts, find ways to capture those concepts in nature, and complete a nature photography bingo card.  Participants can do this program from ANYWHERE in the world and you don't have to be a youth or even a 4-H member (but we would love for you to join us!).  Adults are welcome and encouraged and it's fun!!!

From Educator Shannon Range - My brother lives in Texas and we do this challenge together for prizes.  Basically, whoever gets the first double, picture frame, and blackout bingo owes each other treats the next time we see each other.  The grand prize for blackout and a sushi dinner!

How it works...

Once you register and close to or on the starting date, you will receive the correct number of Photo Concept Scavenger Hunt Bingo cards (full page PDF file - we have many versions if you register more than one person) that you can print out and take with you on your hunt.  You will learn the photo concept, find the concept on the card and create your image.  Once you have created it, you can mark that spot off.  You will try to find as many bingos as you can by finding and creating the concepts on your card.

All participants will receive a bingo card and educational handouts explaining concepts you will be asked to shoot.

Concepts
Concepts can include any of the following as it depends on the card you are given.
  • Backlit leaf (ensure it is semi-transparent
  • Silhouette tree that looks ominous (scary)
  • Bigger than life - worm's point of view in which the object looks way bigger than it is in real life
  • Distorted - using either a wide angle or getting really close to make an image distorted
  • Low-light - using low light to create a dramatic image
  • Lights at night...
  • Etc...

Rules
  • You can only cross off ONE square per day when you are on a hike of at least ONE mile.
  • To count your square, you need to create the concept in a photo and send it along with your updated bingo card to an online form at  https://form.jotform.com/231044289569161.
  • You will receive a "WILDCARD" to use on any square for each Forest Preserve, County or State Park you hike at. Thus, if you find one item is hard to find, use your wildcard!  But remember, only one find per day and it must be crossed off the day you hike.

Prizes
Participants will earn a variety of 4-H swag and prizes from stickers to magnets and even a macro lens that slips over most cell phones (for blackouts on two cards) for the accomplishments listed below.  Remember, at least one mile per hike and only one find per day.  All bingos need to be documented and uploaded.
