Modern Homesteading Book Club Zoom Meetings

Online registration is closed. Please contact Maggie Ray at mro@illinois.edu or (618) 687-1727 for information about this program.

Join us for a homesteading book club as we read independently and meet on four Zoom sessions to discuss our thoughts and share ideas. Meetings will start at 6:00 p.m. and run approximately one hour (depending on the discussion, it may go over an hour). The book we will be reading is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver, Camille Kingsolver, and Steven L. Hopp.

We met the pre-registration/interest minimum of 5 people by January 7, so you may purchase your book.

Book Club Meeting Dates and Assignments:
• February 11 (discuss chapters 1-6)
• February 25 (discuss chapters 7-12)
• March 11 (discuss chapters 13-16)
• March 25 (discuss chapters 17-20)

About the Book - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
Author Barbara Kingsolver and her family abandoned the industrial-food pipeline to live a rural life—vowing that, for one year, they’d only buy food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is an enthralling narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.

Sensitivity and Courtesy:
You may have different viewpoints from the author.  That is ok!  Let’s be sensitive to one another and challenge our thinking together while learning about agriculture and natural resource topics related to homesteading and food ethics.  Depending on how many participants join each club meeting, all voices or viewpoints may not be heard.  Be respectful when your peers are sharing and take turns.
