Master Naturalist Training

Master Naturalist training requires 40 hours of coursework including online training modules, assignments, and local field trips focused on natural resource topics. Dates, times, and locations of field trips are pending. Training will begin Sept. 1 with graduation from the program scheduled for Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Mt. Carmel.
Master Naturalists are trained in a variety of topics, including geology, prairies, forestry, ornithology, botany, and more. After training is completed, participants must meet annual volunteer requirements to maintain their certified Master Naturalist status. However, participants are not required to become a certified Master Naturalist to participate in the training.
The training costs $200 and includes a copy of the Master Naturalist manual required to complete the training. Those who commit to becoming a certified Master Naturalist and complete one year of required volunteer hours within the five-county unit may complete the training for a reduced rate of $100. If the volunteer does not fulfill the commitment, the $100 fee must be paid back to Illinois Extension. A limited number of scholarships are also available upon request.
