Little Roots Gardening Program- Livingston, McLean & Woodford (2025)
Registration is closed for this program. Contact Brittnay Haag at bhaag@illinois.edu to be added to a waitlist.
Join us for a summer of growing and exploring in your own backyard!
Little Roots is a gardening program for children 5-7 years old. It is a great activity for 4-H Cloverbud clubs or individuals. The program encourages and inspires youth to grow their food and flowers, and provides an opportunity for family engagement in 4-H programming this summer.
A bright, kid-friendly gardening calendar guides children, with adult support, through activities on growing seven different plants from seed through harvest. The calendar provides weekly activities from May through September, encouraging children to observe the world around them, research horticulture basics, and care for their plants. The youth will explore pollination and insects, weather, plant parts, the life cycle, and plant care.
Participants will receive seeds (radish, pumpkin, zinnia, sunflower, basil), tomato & pepper transplants, a gardening calendar, and supplemental gardening resources. There is no fee to participate in the program.
Adults will be invited to join a private Facebook group to receive gardening tips, videos, and gardening activities. Youth participating in the program are also offered opportunities to “showcase” their vegetables and flowers at their local county 4-H show, community events, and the private Facebook group.
The Little Roots Gardening Calendar and the Leader Activity Guides are also available in Spanish.
