Growing Orchids: Please DON'T Just Add Ice!

Growing Orchids: Please DON'T Just Add Ice!
A Growing Community Program Series hosted by DeWitt & Piatt Master Gardeners

July 16 | 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM | Piatt County Extension Office | 210 S. Market St. | Monticello, IL 61856

Lori Garrett, a lifetime resident of Urbana, has been an admirer of orchids. As a young child, she discovered beautiful native ladyslipper orchids growing near the chicken coop at her grandmother's home, built in 1898 near what is now, downtown Urbana. The family home and those orchids are long gone, but Lori's love of orchids has continued to grow.
Now, with a personal collection of over 200 plants, Lori has learned a lot about growing orchids through both successes and mistakes (and a lot of dead plants). In her presentation, "Please DON'T Just Add Ice!," she will discuss some common types of orchids, cultural basics, and common mistakes to avoid as a home orchid grower.

Lori is a professor in the Natural Sciences Department at Parkland College. She has been a Champaign County Master Gardener since 2009 and is the editor of their bimonthly newsletter, The Cultivator. Lori is also a member of the Executive Board of Central Illinois Orchid Society and serves as the group's webmaster and newsletter editor.
