Title: The role of wildlife rehabilitation and an introduction to the Wildlife Medical Clinic

Speaker: Dr. Stephany Lewis, Clinical Assistant Professor, Zoological Medicine Director, Wildlife Medical Clinic, Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine

Summary: Wildlife rehabilitation is a relatively new field. Many wildlife clinics associated with Colleges of Veterinary Medicine are seeing several thousand animals annually. Most of these animals come to the clinics because of injuries associated with vehicle strikes, window strikes, domestic animal attacks, toxicoses, and other anthropogenic causes. This talk will define and provide an overview of the field of wildlife rehabilitation and discuss the roles wildlife rehabilitation can play in wildlife welfare, conservation, research, education, and public health. This will be followed by an introduction to the Wildlife Medical Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine which annually sees over 2200 animals representing over 130 species.

Bio:  Dr. Lewis has been involved in wildlife rehabilitation since 2009. After completing her DVM from Tufts University, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Michigan State University, followed by an internship in wildlife and conservation medicine at Tufts Wildlife Clinic. She worked as the full-time staff veterinarian at the California Wildlife Center and Ojai Raptor Center. Currently, she is Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Wildlife Medical Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lewis is a Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator by the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council and is board-certified in Avian Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
