Our Fascinating and Ever-Changing Climate of East-central Illinois
Speaker: Dr. Jim Angel, Climatologist
Monday, October 21, 7-8pm
Illinois Extension Office, 801 N Country Fair Dr. Champaign, IL 61821 and via Zoom

Sponsored by the East Central Illinois Master Naturalist Continuing Education Committee

There is rarely a dull moment with the climate and weather of east-central Illinois. To help in understanding where our climate is headed, we must first look at historical temperature and precipitation patterns, droughts, heat waves, frost dates, growing season length, and heavy rainfall. What do those trends portend for master naturalists in the near future? Some climate tools that we can use to monitor current and historical conditions will be shared. And we will look at the short-term forecast by National Weather Service to see what might be in store for us this fall and winter.

Dr. Angel worked at the Illinois State Water Survey beginning in 1984. He served as the Illinois State Climatologist for 21 years (1997-2018) and is currently emeritus. He has a BS and MS degree from the University of Missouri and a PhD from the University of Illinois in climate science. His research interests include climate change and variability in the 20th and 21st centuries, focusing mostly on agriculture and extreme rainfall events. He was the lead author of the Midwest Chapter of the National Climate Assessment, released in 2018, and co-leader of the Illinois Climate Assessment in 2021.
