DESCRIPTION
Today we live in an area surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Have you wondered what this place was like in the past and how people interacted with the expanses of prairie, wetlands, and forests? Join Dr. Robert Morrissey for a journey through Illinois during the era of early European colonization. Learn about the remarkable premodern Indigenous history, and how people and non-human nature shaped each other. Tracing the rise and fall of midwestern Indigenous groups, the talk will highlight an extraordinary, diverse human history.

Dr. Robert Morrissey is a Professor in the University of Illinois Department of History. He is author or co-author of numerous books, book chapters and articles on the intersection of the history of indigenous peoples with the environmental history of the tallgrass prairie region of North America. His book, People of the Ecotone: Environmental and Indigenous Power at the Center of Early America, focuses on the environmental and cultural history of the tallgrass prairie in premodern times.
