Cosplay for Science: An Interactive Workshop for Teachers WAITLIST
The registration period has ended.
This is the waitlist for spots in the following program:
Cosplay for Science: A Workshop-style Professional Development and Discussion for Teachers
This will be a workshop-style instructor training and discussion with interactive material. The target audience is teachers for grades 3-12 looking to make science or any subject fun, impactful, and creative. Cosplay for Science is an initiative dedicated to making science accessible through cosplay. We aim to lower perceived barriers between scientists and students, effectively communicate science through the lens of popular culture, and subsequently demonstrate the efficacy of our science communication initiatives through data collection, research, and published results. During this play testing session, instructors will be run through a simulated replay of a one-shot game written to introduce concepts relating to invasive species biology. The teachers will be given characters to play as in the game and learn the basics of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition ruleset. Along with playing the game itself, teachers will discuss potential uses for the game in the classroom or student club settings, as well as the larger questions of the use of narrative/roleplay techniques in teaching. Afterwards, teachers will receive resources to aid in running the game themselves with their students.
Professional Development Credits: 5 hours.
Date: August 5, 2025
Time: 10 am to 3 pm Central
Location: Illinois Extension Auditorium
801 N Country Fair Dr. Champaign, IL 61821
Lunch included!
For questions or reasonable accommodations to participate, contact Karla Griesbaum at kherzma2@illinois.edu.
