Do you have shrubs in your landscape that need pruning? Are your flowering shrubs not so floriferous despite your pruning efforts? Are you worried that past pruning was done incorrectly? Don't be left scratching your head! Join the Champaign County Master Gardeners for "Do's and Don'ts of Shrub Pruning".
Pruning is one of the most important landscape maintenance tasks we perform since it impacts our most valuable perennial plants, trees, and shrubs. However, many of us are often left with many more questions than answers when we attempt to prune woody plants. Horticulture Educator, Ryan Pankau, will cover all the ins and outs of shrub pruning. Ryan will focus on horticulturally correct pruning techniques to meet a variety of objectives in the garden. Whether it's maintaining the size or health of plants or simply trying to beautify your landscaping, Ryan has tips and tricks to help accomplish your pruning goals.
In this presentation, you will learn:
- How to make proper pruning cuts
- Species-specific pruning techniques for many common landscape shrubs
- Proper timing for shrub pruning with respect to flowering, shrub health, maintaining size/shape, and other objectives.
Ryan Pankau is the Horticulture Educator for Illinois Extension serving Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, and Vermilion counties in Central Illinois.
