Attracting Native Bees to Your Own Backyard Pollinator Garden

Join Illinois Extension to learn more about Illinois' native bee population and gardening to attract pollinators. Extension Horticulture Educator Kim Rohling will lead the program, followed by a tour of the Wayne County pollinator garden with Extension Local Food Systems and Small Farms Educator Katie Bell.

About the program:
Supporting native bee populations in your garden helps maintain biodiversity and contributes to more resilient ecosystems and agricultural systems. Join Horticulture Educator Kim Rohling for an informative program exploring the fascinating world of native bees. Participants will learn what native bees are, why they are essential pollinators, and how many species exist. The program will also cover practical ways to support bees by gardening with native plants, highlight profiles of several native bee species, and introduce opportunities to get involved in citizen science efforts that help researchers better understand and protect these important pollinators.

Weather permitting:
Following the presentation, participants are invited to join a guided walk through the Wayne County pollinator garden to observe habitat features and plants that support native bees in action. If you would like to practice using the iNaturalist app during the garden walk, please download the app to your device ahead of time. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Water will be available and the Extension Office will be open for cooling down.
