2023 DeWitt, Macon, and Piatt Master Gardener Training

University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers who put their green thumbs to good use by training with Extension horticulture experts and then sharing their knowledge in the community. Together we are constantly learning and that's what makes it fun!

Training emphasizes practical research-based information and includes virtual lectures, discussions, activities and online videos.  Training topics include: Botany, Plant Pathology, Annuals and Perennials, Soils, Insects, Woody Ornamentals, Vegetables, Turf, Fruits, IMP and Living with Wildlife.  


There are 5 training options in 2023!

Self-Paced Online Training | $300
Winter 2023 | January 30-April 30 | Register by January 5
Summer 2023 | June 12-September 30 | Register by May 15
Fall 2023 | October 2-December 31 | Register by September 1

Hybrid Training | $175
Winter | Tuesdays | 9 AM-Noon | February 7-April 18

In-person portion at DeWitt County Extension Office (Clinton)

Fall | Thursdays | 5:30-8:30 PM | September 14-December 7
Register by September 1
In-person portion offered at Macon County Extension Office (Decatur) and Piatt County Extension Office (Monticello)

A strong internet connection is recommended for the self-paced online and hybrid courses. 

Once you submit this Master Gardener class registration:

  1. The Master Gardener Program Coordinator will contact you for an informal interview.
  2. Classes and 40 hours of volunteer time are mandatory in order to become a certified active Master Gardener. Volunteer time can be completed within 2 years of taking the course.
  3. To maintain certification in subsequent years, you must complete 10 hours of continuing education and 20 hours of volunteer activities annually.
